Recently given a thin old mare?

I was recently given an Older mare(20's) shes as sweet as pie but shes on the thin side. the owner told me he was giving her alfalfa..in my experience thats not the best for puttin the wieght on but i wanna avoid colic so any Ideas how I can get her to chunk up a bit safely?? thanks for the help
