Coolant leak problems....?

I have a 1997 Chevy Malibu...I have a coolant leak in my car...I have been puttin water in it but after like a mile my low coolant light comes on. Today my car almost overheated, it was steaming but shut my car off before it got to hot....what are some possible problems with my car and possibly the price to fix it? Thanks in advance!!
